The Detroit Lions are eagerly anticipating the return of standout running back Jahmyr Gibbs, who has been sidelined with a hamstring injury sustained during a practice session earlier this month. As the team heads into their final preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, head coach Dan Campbell expressed optimism about Gibbs' recovery and his potential availability for the Lions' Week 1 showdown with the Los Angeles Rams.
Gibbs, who made a significant impact in his debut season, recorded impressive stats with 945 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns on 182 carries. His performance placed him second on the team in rushing yards, touchdowns, and carries, establishing him as a crucial player in the Lions' offensive lineup. Additionally, Gibbs displayed versatility by contributing 52 receptions for 316 yards and one touchdown through the air. During the playoffs, Gibbs continued to shine, adding 144 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 29 carries, along with 94 yards and one touchdown on 14 receptions.
Speaking on his recovery, Campbell remains optimistic, saying, "Our plan is to get him going next week." He further noted that Gibbs is "trending the right way" in terms of his rehabilitation process. Campbell hopes to see several key players, including Gibbs, return to action soon after the final preseason game against the Steelers on Saturday.
"We're hoping the day after [this Saturday's preseason finale against the Steelers], I think we're going to get a lot of guys back," Campbell shared, emphasizing the importance of having a healthy roster as the regular season approaches. He acknowledged that while they wished for more practice time with Gibbs, his healing process is on schedule. "Wish we had more practice with him, but as far as the health of it, he's healing and he's on schedule to be back, and get his legs back under him. And we'll see where he's at," Campbell added.
Looking ahead to their Week 1 clash against the Rams, Campbell highlighted the rigorous preparation the team will undertake. "And then they'll get next week's practice before we get ready for the Rams and then we do Rams practice. So, Gibbs falls into that boat," Campbell stated.
Apart from Gibbs, the Lions are eagerly awaiting the return of other essential players. Those listed as potential returnees include tight end Sam LaPorta, offensive tackle Dan Skipper, guard Kevin Zeitler, linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez, and defensive lineman DJ Reader. These players' health and availability will be crucial as the Lions prepare for the demanding regular season.
With the final preseason contest just around the corner, the Lions are focused on ensuring their stars are in peak physical condition. The team’s cumulative effort in these last few preseason days will set the tone for the upcoming season. Dan Campbell's positive outlook serves as a motivational boost, not only for Gibbs but for the entire squad, as they aim to start the regular season on a strong note.
The return of Gibbs, along with other key players, will be instrumental in shaping the Lions' game strategy. His powerful running and ability to contribute in the passing game make him a dual-threat that defenses must reckon with. As Gibbs is expected to be back on the field soon, fans and teammates alike are eager to see him replicate, if not surpass, his debut season's stellar performance.
The whole organization, from coaches to players, is working towards ensuring a smooth transition from preseason to regular-season play. The collective focus is on building momentum and maintaining strong health to tackle the challenges that lie ahead. With Coach Campbell confident about the impending return of vital players like Gibbs, the Detroit Lions are poised to make their mark as they venture into the new season.
