As the Philadelphia Eagles wrapped up their last practice session before the much-anticipated preseason opener, the team was met with clearing skies, allowing for an uninterrupted 75-minute practice. The players, eager to showcase their readiness, zealously hit the double-digit practice mark.
The roster was, however, hit with notable absences, including safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson, who was missing for the second practice in a row due to a shoulder injury. Linebacker Oren Burks sat out his ninth consecutive session because of a knee issue. The injury list also saw wide receiver Parris Campbell, safety Mekhi Garner, and linebacker Brandon Smith, all of whom missed their fourth straight practice. None of these players are expected to suit up for the preseason opener.
Shuffling Positions and Key Standouts
Despite the absences, other players stepped up to fill crucial roles. Linebackers Zack Baun and Devin White led the first-team unit admirably. The safety positions were secured by James Bradberry and Reed Blankenship, while the outside cornerback spots were held by Isaiah Rodgers and Darius Slay. Quinyon Mitchell stepped in as the first-team slot cornerback, displaying notable performance in a critical role.
Tight end Grant Calcaterra had an impressive practice session, catching a touchdown pass from starting quarterback Jalen Hurts and a 25-yard pass later on. Calcaterra also connected with Kenny Pickett on a slant pass, showcasing his reliability and versatility as a target. On the defensive side, Darius Slay demonstrated his skills by breaking up a deep pass from Jalen Hurts intended for wide receiver Joseph Ngata.
Offensive and Defensive Highlights
The offensive line saw Lane Johnson nullifying Brandon Graham's rush on three consecutive plays during the 11-on-11 drills, indicating a solid performance in protecting the quarterback. Meanwhile, Mekhi Becton stood firm as the first-team right guard, providing stability in the offensive line, despite Tyler Steen being sidelined due to an ankle injury.
The receiving corps showed depth, as Britain Covey made a remarkable catch on an out route against defenders Tristin McCollum and Andre' Sam. On the defensive front, Jeremiah Trotter Jr. received commendation from teammate Zack Baun after a pivotal defensive stop, with Baun cheering, "Good eyes, Trot! Good eyes!"
Emerging Defensive Talent
Defensive tackle Moro Ojomo has been a consistent performer over the past four practices, generating interior pressure that has caught the coaches' attention. Ojomo's consistent efforts may well secure him a spot as the fourth defensive tackle behind Jalen Carter, Jordan Davis, and Milton Williams.
Another notable highlight from the practice was wide receiver Austin Watkins, who made a diving catch for a significant gain against cornerback Josh Jobe, underscoring the competition and determination prevalent in the team.
As the preseason opener looms, this final practice session will serve as a key evaluation point for the coaching staff to assess the depth and readiness of the squad. While injuries have sidelined some key players, the resilience and performance of others have given the team a balanced outlook heading into the first test of the season.
