Former NFL wide receiver and return specialist Jacoby Jones passed away peacefully at his home in New Orleans on Sunday, just days after celebrating his 40th birthday. Jones, a beloved figure in the NFL community, is remembered not only for his athletic prowess but also for his vivacious spirit and deep faith.
Jones first entered the NFL spotlight in 2007 when he was drafted by the Houston Texans in the third round. Spending five seasons with the Texans, he carved a niche for himself as an exceptional punt returner, holding the franchise record for career punt return average at 10.2 yards. However, it was his tenure with the Baltimore Ravens that cemented his legacy in professional football.
Joining the Ravens in 2012, Jones quickly became a pivotal player in what would become a hallmark season. He played a key role in Baltimore's 2012 Super Bowl triumph, delivering unforgettable performances that are etched in the annals of NFL history. In Super Bowl XLVII, Jones covered a staggering 290 total yards, setting a Super Bowl record. His 108-yard kickoff return against the San Francisco 49ers remains the longest in Super Bowl and postseason history. Additionally, he caught a 56-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Joe Flacco, contributing significantly to the Ravens' victory.
Earlier that postseason, in the AFC Divisional Round, Jones scored a critical 70-yard receiving touchdown against the Denver Broncos, helping the Ravens secure a dramatic 38-35 double-overtime win. His on-field achievements earned him First-Team All-Pro honors and a spot in the Pro Bowl the same year, making him one of the most celebrated players of the season.
Jones's career continued with brief stints at the San Diego Chargers and Pittsburgh Steelers in 2015 before he officially retired as a Baltimore Raven in 2016. Post-retirement, he remained active in the football community, serving as the head coach for the Beaumont Renegades in Beaumont, Texas, where he was greatly admired for his leadership and mentorship.
Reflecting on his character and impact, Ravens head coach John Harbaugh shared heartfelt words: “I loved Jacoby Jones, we all did. His spirit, enthusiasm, and love for people were powerful. He was a light. He was the cherished son of his loving mom, Ms. Emily. They were so close. He was a man of faith. My favorite Jacoby personal moment was every time I saw his smiling face full of joy. Rest in peace, Jacoby, in the arms of Jesus.”
Steelers coach Mike Tomlin also expressed his condolences: “My heartfelt sympathy goes out to the family of Jacoby Jones during this difficult time. I enjoyed coaching him during his time with the Steelers.”
Jones was known for his ability to connect with people, leaving an indelible mark on everyone he met. The Baltimore Ravens released a statement capturing the essence of his personality: “We are completely heartbroken to learn about the passing of Jacoby Jones. Jacoby had the unique ability to connect with everyone he encountered. His charisma, joy, and love created a one-of-a-kind presence that could light up any room or brighten any dark day. Jacoby will long be remembered not just for his success on the football field, but for the lasting personal connections he made with countless people in the Ravens organization, Baltimore community, and every area he called home. We share our deepest condolences with Jacoby’s family as we all begin to process this devastating loss.”
Sam Gordon, owner of the Beamont Renegades, highlighted Jones’ humility and generosity: “He was the best, he loved everyone. I think one of the most important things is he was a man of God. He was proud of how much he loved and feared his God. What was most important to him after football was helping the next person in line. He was the most humble and kind person to anybody who gave him the time and needed the time from him.”
Jones is survived by his son, also named Jacoby, and his mother, Emily. The NFL community mourns the loss of a player whose impact was felt far beyond the gridiron. His legacy, marked by record-breaking achievements and an unwaveringly positive spirit, will be cherished for years to come.
