Texans Release Diontae Johnson Ahead of Chiefs Clash
The Houston Texans have made a surprising roster change ahead of their divisional showdown with the Kansas City Chiefs, releasing wide receiver Diontae Johnson. The move comes after Johnson's brief stint with the team, which included two game appearances following his acquisition off waivers from the Baltimore Ravens on December 23.
Johnson's journey this season has been a whirlwind, marked by multiple trades and waivers. Originally with the Pittsburgh Steelers, he found himself with the Carolina Panthers before a subsequent trade brought him to the Ravens. Baltimore acquired him in October, exchanging a fifth-round draft pick for a sixth-round pick as part of the deal. However, his time with the Ravens was marred by a suspension in Week 15 for conduct detrimental to the team, adding another challenge to an already tumultuous season.
Upon joining the Texans, Johnson managed to make an impact on the field despite limited opportunities. In the regular-season finale against the Tennessee Titans, he caught two passes for 12 yards. His presence was felt again during the Texans' wild-card victory over the Los Angeles Chargers, where he added another 12-yard reception. Johnson participated in 16 offensive snaps in that game, accounting for approximately 22% of the team's plays.
The decision to release Johnson comes as the Texans prepare to enhance their receiving core, focusing on young talents like John Metchie III, Robert Woods, and Xavier Hutchinson. Nico Collins remains the standout receiver and key offensive weapon as Houston advances into the playoffs.
Johnson's career has been notable for its ups and downs, highlighted by a standout year in 2021 with the Pittsburgh Steelers. During that season, he earned a Pro Bowl selection, amassing 107 receptions, 1,161 yards, and eight touchdowns. Throughout his career, Johnson has recorded 391 receptions, over 4,363 yards, and 25 touchdowns in 77 games.
The Texans' decision to move on from Johnson underscores the team's commitment to building around a core of emerging talents as they aim to deepen their postseason campaign. As for Johnson, after enduring a season full of roster moves and adjustments, the search for a new team begins again, offering yet another opportunity to bring his seasoned skills to bear on another NFL team.
