Breaking Barriers: Jessica Campbell Joins Seattle Kraken Coaching Staff

In a historic move for the NHL, Jessica Campbell has been appointed to the Seattle Kraken coaching staff, becoming the first woman in NHL history to serve as a full-time coach. This groundbreaking achievement marks another milestone in Campbell's distinguished career in hockey coaching and player development.

Campbell's journey to this historic appointment began long before her recent contributions to the Kraken. During the 2014-15 season, she made her mark as the team captain in the inaugural CWHL All-Star Game. This leadership role foreshadowed her future endeavors in hockey coaching. In 2022, Campbell further etched her name in the annals of hockey history by becoming the first woman to coach in the American Hockey League (AHL), where she served as an assistant coach with the Coachella Valley Firebirds.

Commitment to Player Development

During her tenure with the Firebirds, Campbell was responsible for managing the team's power play. Her coaching prowess did not go unnoticed, especially by Kraken coach Dan Bylsma. “During our tenure in Coachella Valley, I saw firsthand Jessica's commitment to player development. Her ability to establish relationships with her players, specifically Tye Kartye, Shane Wright, and Ryker Evans, was an important factor in this hire. I'm looking forward to continuing to work with her at the NHL level,” Bylsma remarked.

One of the standout players under Campbell's mentorship, Tye Kartye, was awarded the 2023 AHL Dudley "Red" Garrett Award for the most outstanding rookie. Kartye's impressive season with the Kraken, scoring 20 points over 77 games, is a testament to Campbell's effective coaching and developmental strategies.

Trailblazing in International and Professional Hockey

Campbell's influence extends beyond domestic leagues. In 2022, she became the first woman to coach a men's national team during the IIHF Men's World Championship with Team Germany. Her role with Team Germany also included working with Kraken goaltender Philipp Grubauer, showcasing her international coaching capabilities. Additionally, Campbell has offered her expertise as a power-skating coach to athletes such as Natalie Spooner and Joel Edmundson, further solidifying her reputation in the hockey community.

Before her appointment with the Kraken, Campbell held coaching roles with the Nurnberg Ice Tigers in 2021, continuing to build her resume with diverse coaching experiences across various levels of professional hockey.

A Humbling Achievement

Campbell's appointment comes during an era where the Kraken are making significant strides, including the signing of 2024 Stanley Cup champion Brandon Montour. As Campbell steps into this new role, she remains focused and grounded. “I just focused on the task at hand in coaching, but absolutely, it's obviously a tremendous opportunity and I'm honored to be where I am and to be -- it's a humbling feeling to be a part of the Kraken organization,” Campbell reflected.

Emphasizing a growth mindset, Campbell added, “For me, that's what it's about. Just putting my head down and doing the work. You know, where it takes me it takes me, but I'm obviously honored to be on this path and continue to just do the good work that it takes to hopefully reach that goal.”

The Kraken's decision to integrate Campbell into their coaching staff aligns with their commitment to progressive and inclusive practices within the organization. As Campbell takes on the likely responsibility of heading the Kraken's power play, her proven track record indicates that the team's offensive strategies are in capable hands.

Looking forward, Campbell's approach remains clear and focused. “I'm a big believer in just keeping a growth mindset every day. Obviously, my goal is to continue to coach at the highest level, but timelines aren't necessary for me and definitely not where my focus is,” she stated.

Jessica Campbell's appointment is more than just a personal victory; it represents a significant step forward in the landscape of professional hockey. As the NHL continues to evolve, trailblazers like Campbell are leading the charge, breaking down barriers and setting new standards for future generations.
